Parents and families added to GLBT youth program
by Dan Hlad
Cleveland-The Lesbian-Gay Community Service Center will embark on a new avenue of support and outreach this fall when it introduces its PRYSM Families Project. The project expands the center's youth program, Presence and Respect for Youth in Sexual Minority, to include support for parents and siblings of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people ages 20 and under, as well as a new program for children of LGBT parents.
"When a child is dealing with issues of sexual orientation or gender identity, we are quick to provide them with safe space and support," said Jennifer Kruger, the center's youth program coordinator. "We aren't so
families to turn for support and encouragement," he said.
Kreite and other parents will be featured in ads in several community based and family publications to promote the new program. The ads will encourage parents to seek support if they are dealing with issues related to their child's sexual orientation.
The parents group has already begun and runs once a month in conjunction with the PRYSM Saturday support group.
The Center
quick to do the same for parents and other family members even though their emotions are as fluid and confusing."
It is normal for even the most supportive parent to feel shame or guilt associated with their child's homosexuality. If nothing else, the confusion and lack of support can make it difficult for parents, who may forgo their own support in the interest of their child. All of that applied to Bruce Kreite when his son
came out.
"When our son informed us he was gay 20 years ago, our family was devastated," Kreite said. "We were a long time healing and becoming a family again."
While Kreite has worked his way to acceptance of his child's sexuality, he recognizes the need for services for parents dealing with similar issues. “Thank heavens there is a place, now, for both gay persons and their
PRYSM provides support, information and social opportunities to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning people ages 20 and under. The group provides a range of activities for young people within a weekly Saturday afternoon support group and a weekly Wednesday evening social drop-in night. The Children of GLBT Parents group is currently being developed and will begin in the fall.
Additional support and social opportunities will be developed on a need basis for families dealing with issues related to member's sexual orientation or gender identity.
The project is funded in part through the Benjamin S. Gerson Family Foundation and the Gerson-Margolis Foundation. For more information, call the center at 216-522-1999 or see the web site http://www.lgcsc.org. Activities take place at the center, located at 1418 West 29th Street, Cleveland.
Dan Hlad is public relations director of the Lesbian-Gay Community Service Center of Cleveland.
